Historical Challenges of Measuring Salinity From Space

[26-Feb-2013] Before the actual Aquarius satellite could be launched into space to begin recording sea surface salinity measurements, there were "proof of concept" salinity sensors built and tested in labs and pools. In this clip, Dr. Yi Chao, Project Scientist for the NASA Aquarius satellite mission, explains how satellite technology has evolved throughout the years to deal with the challenge of measuring ocean salinity from space. He points out that early experiments conducted by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory yielded little in the way of usable data, but this process allowed engineers and researchers to make adjustments and try their experiment again.
