NASA Saildrone ATOMIC Field Campaign Dataset Release

Alt Tag: Saildrone.
News Description: The Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) is pleased to announce the availability of the NASA-funded Saildrone data as part of the Atlantic Tradewind Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Interaction Campaign (ATOMIC). The ATOMIC campaign involved the deployment of a fleet of Saildrones in the Atlantic waters offshore of Barbados over a 45 day period from 17 January to 2 March 2020. The goal was to understand the ocean-atmosphere interaction, particularly over mesoscale ocean eddies in that region.

View animations of the survey track and measurement data: The Saildrone ATOMIC dataset hosted at the PO.DAAC is comprised of two data files for each of three NASA-funded saildrones deployed. The files contain near-surface observational data (air temperature, sea surface skin and bulk temperatures, salinity, oxygen and chlorophyll-a concentrations, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction) and a related set of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data spanning the entire cruise for each saildrone at 1 and 5 minute temporal resolution respectively. All data files are in netCDF format and CF/ACDD compliant.

The Saildrone ATOMIC data are described, discoverable and accessible via the PO.DAAC data portal. Further information is available from the Saildrone website and also via the Saildrone Mission page on the PO.DAAC portal.
