Amazon River Freshwater Discharge
[18-Jun-2018] Sea surface salinity data animation from 27-Mar-2015 to 16-Apr-2018 based on data from NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. High outflow from the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico (low salinity water shown in dark blue) is evident, for example, during August 2015. In addition, the animation shows salinity impacts from the world's largest river in terms of discharge, the Amazon. The relatively low salinity Amazon plume is moved northward and eastward by ocean currents, the North Brazil and Equatorial Countercurrents, respectively. The animation can also be viewed from PODAAC's Youtube channel. The animation is produced from the 8-day running mean version 2.0 SMAP product provided by Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) with a spatial smoothing of 70km and gridded at 25km. The data set can be downloaded from the PODAAC Portal here. (00:00:45) Credit: PO.DAAC / NASA JPL.
